Science, Science is a leading world outlet for scientific news, commentary, and cutting-edge research. Science Online is the electronic version of the print journal, and includes the full text of the journal’s news stories, research reports, and commentary articles in full-text HTML or PDF from January 1997 to the present.

For community college libraries, this database is priced slightly above what it would cost to acquire Science in print. Given that (a) with the online version there can be unlimited simultaneous users, whereas with the print version, you are limited to one user at a time; and (b) libraries can have access to a fairly extensive back-file of full-text articles, (going back to 1997), a subscription to this product can be considered a great value.

    Although I do find this product a valuable addition to our electronic resource collection, I find still find myself somewhat dismayed by the look and feel of Science’s homepage which looks more like a commercial web page than a scholarly publication.

    The main search page is cluttered with banner ads, scrolling announcements, and links to content that we do not have access to with our institutional account. Faculty members at my college have complained about the presence of pop-up ads (!) And search results often contain links to content (e.g. archival content) that is available only with an additional fee.

    I would like to see the interface of this product streamlined to improve searchability. If this were not possible, then perhaps the vendor could design another “interface” for academic institutions (minus the ads) and perhaps add the ability, at the administrative level to “turn off” or at least not display content in search results that is not part of an institution’s plan.

    I agree with Shelley, in fact, I expressed some of the same concerns to the person at their booth at ACRL last year. I like the product, and it’s really not that much more expensive than the print. I wish we could limit what our users see to the content that we actually subscribe to. Maybe if more of us express our concerns to the vendor they will take note.
