Murals Tutorials

Product Statement by the CCL-EAR Committee,
Updated November 2009

Miles Multimedia (http://www.milesmultimedia.com/) is an independent vendor that currently offers two subscription services to different types of online tutorials: one on Information Literacy instruction in general, and another titled “How it Works.” How It Works includes tutorials on major vendors’ databases and other web-based research tools. In the near future, Miles Multimedia plans to release a third product called ‘Certificates’, which will use a selection of quizzes to determine student competency in different areas (e.g. MLA format). This preview looks at the “How it Works” tutorials, examples of which are available here:

Taking a look at the tutorials and the service, the reviewers find both potential and serious limitations.

Given its current limitations (especially lack of closed captioning and varied production quality), MURALS has limited value for California community college libraries. However, if planned improvements come to fruition – e.g. closed captioning – and production quality is enhanced, then MURALS’s products may become more appealing, particularly given its reasonable cost.
