netLibrary, a division of OCLC, is the leading provider of eBooks and Internet-based content management services. The company was founded in August, 1998, purchased by OCLC in early 2002, and is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado.

netLibrary develops, archives, hosts, and securely distributes eBooks through a variety of channels, including academic, corporate, public and school libraries. The company has unified the electronic offerings of about 350 publishers. Currently, they have over 8000 academic, public, corporate and government library customers. netLibrary has developed the world’s largest collection of eBook content currently consisting of over 61,000 copyrighted titles and 3,400 public domain titles. The collection offers a growing depth of content that spans many subject areas suitable for community college curricula.

eBooks are full-text electronic versions of published books that library patrons can search, borrow, read, and return via the Internet. eBooks have taken many formats and variations and have been available for several decades, most notably through the efforts of Project Gutenberg.

For libraries eBooks have several advantages over traditional printed books. Because they are electronic in nature they can never be lost or stolen and pages can never be removed or defaced. eBook users can access library resources anywhere and anytime, even when the library is closed. eBooks can be viewed online using an Internet browser and do not require the reader to come to the physical library building. And, finally, eBooks have advanced search capabilities that allow the reader to perform searches across hundreds of books or within a specific book to speed research and reference projects.
